C an’t find a recycling center in my area. The trans am somehow had more than 5 gallons of gas left in the tank (for several years now) depite the fact that both the return lines were completely open. I don’t know any boyscouts either, that was my friend’s suggestion.

Kinja'd!!!

How has it not all evaporated by now?

Kinja'd!!!

its a mystery to me

I’m taking less legal suggestions. You aren’t a cop are you?

Ultimate less legal suggestions: drive around at night, find storm drain in secluded area, or, dig hole in backyard and cover over. You can also dig out a big pit and burn it.

Alternatively, check your local sanitation services provider and see if there is a recycling day for chemicals.

Unfortunately, in my case, its run by the state, and the only one happening in my county for the whole year appears to have already happened on a day when I had to work, so I’ve got to keep about 15 gallons of old gas in the shed for another year (I don’t know what the hell the previous owner was powering, but they seemed to have been hoarding the stuff).

If youtube has taught me anything, you pour it on a big pile of wood, light it, and then realize that you’ve wildly underestimated how well gasoline burns.

Could you mix it in with good gas a little bit at a time until it's gone?

When I was a teen I’d draw scenes on the driveway with gasoline and then light it up whilst taking a picture, usually from the roof, with a long exposure time. I wish I knew where those photos went to - they were pretty cool.

that would take an awful long time, I need the can because there is somehow yet more gas in the tank I have to get out.

Fuck it, why not drink it at that point? Become one with the car.

my friend told me they used to call it “boyscout magic water”

I'm putting a gallon at a time in my DD with a modern ECU. I figure if I'm just commuting with boring throttle use, the computer is smart enough to adjust timing for less than optimal gas?

I don’t really want to put bad 87 octane in my new turbo FOST. I really don’t.

Flashpoint, how does that work?

The issue has more to do with introducing water into the fuel system, thus causing rust.

I get that. I feel a little safer putting that in a Crosstrek. I mean, could it really drive slower?

I’ll see if my dad wants to run it in the family car but I doubt it.

The suggested technique is to evaporate it off, use disposable roasting pans in the sun. That is the most environmentally friendly way to get rid of it. Alternatively put it in a can and give it to some landscapers that’s what I did, I even told them it was old they did n’t care

Put i t in a can and advertise it for free on Craigslist. Please don’t dump it on the ground or in a stormdrain. That goes right into the environment.

One of the chemistry channels on YouTube, I don’t remember which one right now, showed that adding distilled water to gasoline results in separation of the diluted ethanol from the fuel, since ethanol is hydrophilic and will dissolve in water preferentially over gasoline. Then, because water is denser, it’ll precipitate and settle at the bottom, where it can be separated, resulting in clean ethanol-free gasoline .

Old lawnmower and old motorhome. The 460 Ford doesn't care what quality gas goes into it.

Makes a great weed killer. Put some in a spray bottle and use it on hornets/wasps. Or pour it in a bucket and use for cleaning parts.

If you’ve got some neighbors you don’t like, pour it on their lawn in the shape of a dick.

I like to get rid of old gas by burning it one 64 ounce Big Gulp cup at a time in my backyard.  Generally by tossing it on an already burning stack of pallets for a big ol’ WHOOMPF.  My son and his friends think it’s awesome, lol.  My backyard faces a major street out back though, so the fire department shows up now and then because people driving by think the apocalypse is begining.  But I’m friendly with the firemen in my neighborhood, so they come by, eat some cookies and take off, since the WHOOMPF is long gone by the time they show up, lol!  Note:  This is in suburban Phoenix in a pretty nice neighborhood filled with exotics, I see Lambos, an Audi R8, G-wagens, etc every day.  I’m THAT neighbor, with my 85 K5 in the midst of an engine swap in the driveway...  the HOA hates me.

I mix it with good fresh gas for the lawnmower. Burns well. Might take a summer but it works.

In a 99% enclosed environment (like a gas tank with open vent lines) not much will evaporate.

I’m in a similar spot, I’ve got 7 or so gallons of 2-year-old 87 that I would like rid of, but can’t find out where I can take it to ‘correc tly’ dispose of it. For very small quantities (like the quarter cup when you change a fuel filter) letting it sit in a pan in the sun works pretty well (I’ve had the pan dry by the time I found a container to pour it into) , but I wouldn’t recommend that for more than a splash.

Dilute 50/50 in a lawn mower.

Do NOT pour in in some dirt out back

You can mix it with your used oil and turn it into whom ever collects your used oil. I mean maybe not all 5 gallons at a time, but waste oil does have som fuel in it.
